Mr. Mladenov reiterated assurances of continued United Nations support for the challenging work being undertaken to hold historic elections of the Council of Representatives and the KRG Governorate Councils’ elections, both scheduled for 30 April 2014. The IHEC Chairman and the SRSG also availed this opportunity to visit co-located UNAMI Integrated Electoral Assistance Team and thanked them for their efforts.
In his discussions with the Board of Commissioners, Mr. Mladenov was briefed in detail on issues such as election security, voting for Anbar IDPs, interaction with political entities, international and domestic observation, collaboration between IHEC and the UN Gender Task Force, and ongoing distribution of Electronic Voter Cards. “I am impressed by the hard work being done on daily basis by IHEC personnel despite the unfavourable security environment and constant political challenges”, he said.
The Board of Commissioners expressed its true appreciation for the United Nations continued advisory and development role and reiterated its determination to ensure that free and fair elections will take place despite current and future expected difficulties.
