iMMAP - Mine Action Coordination Meeting at iMMAP Office-Erbil

iMMAP organised and hosted a Nationwide Mine Action Coordination Meeting at iMMAP office in Erbil on 31 July 2016 concerning the “Gray area”.  The areas refer to those recently retaken from ISIL which as of today include the retaken areas of Mosul, Salahaldin, Dyala and Kirkuk. The Gray areas fall under the shared humanitarian mine action reasonability of both Directorate of Mine Action (Bagdad) and Iraqi Kurdistan Mine Action Agency (IKMAA).

The participants included representatives form, mine action NGOs, national authorities of Bagdad and Erbil, commercial entities and concerned ministries.

The purpose of the coordination meeting was to update all parties about the current status of IED/Mine contamination in the gray area, recent progress, clearance achievement and the coordination and collaboration mechanisms of the stakeholders in the mentioned area. Various IM products were presented in the meeting.

Additionally parties were asked to start planning the mine action response, in coordination with DMA and IKMAA, for the eventual military operation of Mosul City.

The enhanced coordination between DMA and IKMAA was highlighted and the importance of close coordination and registration/accreditation process facilitation reiterated.

All parties acknowledged that the number and complexity of IED is evolving which are above the capacity of the mine action operators and authorities. NGOs agreed to work towards establishing an IED classification/recognition booklet which should ultimately guide in developing IED standard working procedures.
