Coordination Efforts in Erbil

  • Monday, 06 April 2015
The coordination of collective NGO action in Iraq is one of the core tasks of the NGO Coordination Committee for Iraq (NCCI). A part of these coordination efforts are the monthly coordination meetings that NCCI organizes in its offices in Baghdad and Erbil.

On 30 March NCCI organized a general coordination meeting in its office in Erbil. The meeting was attended by representatives of 16 NGOs, Radio Al-Salam and the KRG’s Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC). The meeting started with the JCC briefly introducing its work, after which attendants inquired about the possible role of the JCC as a bridge between the Kurdish authorities and the humanitarian sector. The next subject on the agenda was a follow up on the meeting held between NGOs and Humanitarian Coordinator Lise Grande on 20 March. This meeting was held to strengthen the coordination between NGOs and the UN and touched a number of subjects including funding, coordination and NGO representation. The attendants discussed issues concerning NGO representation in the current Humanitarian Country Team’s setup and suggested a number of ways to broaden participation and include local NGOs in the humanitarian coordination structure. The last 2 points on the agenda were a briefing about the first meeting of NCCI’s new Executive Board, followed by a short presentation of Radio Al-Salam, a radio station broadcasting for IDPs and refugees in Ainkawa (Erbil) which will commence its operations shortly.
