I'm working with artist Monica Haller to compile a list of everything that Iraqis need today, according to Iraqis. We want to let Iraqis tell Americans (and others) about the things they and their country need in the wake of 7 1/2 years of American military occupation and 30 years of wars and sanctions. Eventually we're planning to put this list into book form. If you are an Iraqi in Iraq, please reply with any and all things, no matter how small or how large, that you are in need of personally or that Iraq is in need of. This could be anything from electricity to better government to medical treatment to road signs to art supplies to new shoes. Please be specific.

A viable NGO sector has emerged in Iraq. Iraqi NGOs made a significant contribution to delivering humanitarian assistance, channelling both national and international resources. Most LNGOs were established as security conditions began to deteriorate (2003- 2005). With little or no prior experience, LNGOs accepted high levels of risk and adapted to deteriorating conditions and changing needs. Women and IDPs were among the main beneficiary groups. Programmes addressed needs related both to post-2003 conflict and long-term deprivation from basic services, dating back to the Iran Iraq War.

Eight million people are estimated to be in need of immediate assistance as a consequence of the Iraq humanitarian crisis. Amongst them, 4 million are reported to be displaced and over 4 million people were considered as food insecure inside Iraq in 2005, when the overall situation was not as bad as it is today.

Joint Iraq Policy Brief: "Fallen Off the Agenda? More and Better Aid Needed for Iraq Recovery" - Mercy Corps and NCCI - July 2010
In order to effectively contribute to Iraq's recovery, the EU and its member states, including the UK, should acknowledge the need for more significant and longer-term commitment.  Furthermore, they should improve aid effectiveness by ensuring more direct participation of the Iraqi people in the recovery processes.
